Pastor Merlo tells the stories of some members of his congregation.
Sylvia, who hadn’t been attending church at all, decided one Sunday morning that God wanted her to go to church. So she dressed her young children in their best clothes and started walking the neighborhood with them, figuring God would lead her to a church. She heard Hispanic music coming through open church doors, entered, and has been part of the congregation since. “God transformed my life that day,” she says. “My kids love my church, I love my church, and I know God loves me.” Now she’s an active leader at San Pablo and “is always witnessing about her faith,” says her pastor.
Vicente, a young, single immigrant from Mexico, was attending ESL classes. One evening he asked Pastor Merlo for a ride home. On the way, with tears in his eyes, he told him, “I want to know Jesus Christ. I want the joy you have. I want to be saved. What do I do?” Hearing the Gospel, he joined the church, and attends regularly when not working on Sundays.
Jorge and his wife Karina moved to Aurora from Chicago 18 months ago, and looked for a church because, Jorge said, “There was an emptiness in my heart.” Their evangelical background had given them a legalistic view of religion, but God’s grace changed that. Jorge now leads their music ministry and Karina serves in the church office.
